Overview

In 2023, the real estate market saw some listings receive 30 to 100 offers, dramatically increasing the workload for agents to process and manage them. With this, SkySlope saw an opportunity for a product that could make managing this influx of offers easier. I was the main product designer for the product SkySlope Offers. The goal was to help agents and their sellers easily identify their top offers.

Challenges

#1: Adjusting to the high number of offers received

With agents typically handling an average of 12 transactions a year and each listing receiving an overwhelming number of offers, their inboxes were often overflowing with notifications. Sorting and managing them quickly became overwhelming.

#2 : Agents spent significant time sifting through forms and identifying the top offers for their sellers

This tedious task means manually opening each PDF, skimming through 17 pages (for California's offer form), pulling key details, and organizing them into a clear format to guide the seller's decision.

Of 94 agents surveyed in California, 71% indicated they would be interested or very interested in using an online offer management tool.

So how might we make it easier for listing agents to manage the overwhelming number of offers in the 2023 real estate market?

Now imagine a world where the key details of each offer received are automatically organized into a neat, digestible table.

The task flow would look something like this.

Knowledge gap: What makes an offer stand out?

Our diagram had but one great flaw to it so far. It's heavily dependent upon understanding which details matter most when selecting a "top offer". Because this is what will help us determine what key information to identify and bring forward on the offers dashboard.

To address this knowledge gap, we ran a user survey to deepen our understanding and ensure we’re identifying the most important information first when scanning an offer.

Breaking down the criteria for choosing the "top offer"

So we ran another survey and came up with a list of key factors that affect the seller's decision the most when deciding on a top offer.

Laying out wireframes

With our key information defined, we shifted to structuring the application. Wireframes helped us map the layout and flow, prioritize key information, and create a clear hierarchy that aligned with user needs.

The workflow begins with the Buyer Agent uploading their offer to a public page hosted by our product, where it’s processed to identify and organize key offer details which will then appear neatly on the Listing Agent's offers dashboard.

Once submitted via SkySlope Offers, the Listing Agent is instantly notified, making it easy to compare the offer against others.

All offers in one place

Submitted offers are automatically routed to the Listing Agent's dashboard, creating an organized, easy-to-compare view of key details—no extra effort required.

Agents can also favorite top offers, making them easy to revisit and compare later.

Listing Agent can easily share organized offers with the Seller, along with notes and recommendations on top choices and why they stand out!

What agents are saying

What agents are saying

Since launching Offers in January 2022, we’ve heard amazing things from real estate agents. Their positive and reaffirming feedback has been the ultimate reward for over a year of hard work.

“It exceeded my expectations. I thought I might have to put in a lot more information or even maybe draft the agreement of purchase and sale myself. The site did it all for me.”

“Very easy to navigate, great UX/UI - kudos to that team.”

“I thought it was quite easy to use. Even on the first time, I didn’t really have a lot of questions or wonder what my next step was going to be.”

“Everything was very clearly marked and easy to click and walk through.”

“Really, pretty intuitive. Easy to navigate, clean page. Not too much distraction. Easy to focus on the details.”

“Totally exceeded, hands down. I think you thought of everything… I’m really impressed. If this was under normal circumstances, this would maybe take like five minutes. I’m really impressed. It goes beyond because it was so easy to do. There wasn’t too much I was being asked for… I don’t think you could make it any simpler.”

“It was a great website, very easy to use. It wasn’t too much information on one page… very, very simple. Very intuitive. Four easy steps before you get to the offer letter… it would take five minutes to submit an offer. This is a great website.”

"It was very easy to generate a buyer’s offer.”

“Exactly what I feel like I need to be able to efficiently work through multiple offers fo ra client and to go over these different offers with a client easily and quickly in a way that prioritized what’s important to them.”

“This is very easy, very streamlined. One of the worst things about being a real estate agent is all of the paperwork it entails. This would speed up the process significantly and it’s efficient.”

“It was intuitive and seamless and exactly what I would expect from a tool like this. I do like this tool, I think it’s great. If I had 54 offers, I would definitely utilize a tool like this. Most properties I have had 6-7 offers. I would still use it. It’s helpful in any multiple-offer situation.”

“This is very easy, very streamlined. One of the worst things about being a real estate agent is all of the paperwork it entails. This would speed up the process significantly and it’s efficient.”

“Really well thought-out, laid out, and simple.”

Next Steps

Not long after SkySlope Offers launched, the real estate market experienced a significant slowdown. With interest rates climbing above 7%, both listings and offers were impacted.

Adapting this product to meet these changes is the next step—but that’s a story for another time.
